In Muddy Water the Lotus Blooms

Excerpt from “Understanding Our Mind, Chapter 49–
Nothing to Attain, p. 244″, Thich Nhat Hanh

Our afflictions are none other than enlightenment.  We can ride the waves of birth and death in peace.  We can travel in the boat of compassion on the ocean of delusion with a smile of non-fear.  In the light of interbeing, we see the flower in the garbage and the garbage in the flower.  It is on the very ground of suffering, the ground of afflictions, that we can contemplate enlightenment and well-being.

It is exactly in the muddy water that the lotus grows and blooms.
